Ok so as promised here’s a look at the lighting and set up that went into making the recent portrait, for a motivational poster, of Professional Kick Boxing World Champion, Steven ‘Pocket Rocket’ Cook.

There’s a video to check out below but also here’s the kit used; you’ll also find it in my KIT LIST page:

  • Phottix Professional Light C-Stand and Boom (12.5′)
  • Avenger A4041B Aluminium Boom Stand 41 (13.5′ Black) (I use this to support canvas background)
  • Canvas Background made by Gravity Backdrops
  • Tether Tools TetherPro USB 2.0 A Male to Micro-B 5-Pin Cable (15′)
  • Tether Tools Jerk Stopper
  • Sekonic Lite-Master Pro L-478DR Lightmeter (Elinchrom)

Here’s a video giving you a look Behind the Scenes at the photo shoot with all the kit in place in an area of gym:

You’ll see in the studio there was a lot of lighting already there so to remove that from the shot, here’s the settings I used: Manual Mode, f/2.8, 1/125 sec, ISO 100

Positioning the light above, pointing down and to the front of the subject is what I call ‘Bathroom Lighting’ because it’s a technique I used to use when I photographed physiques to enhance the shadow and highlight areas and so make muscle stand out even more. It’s also great to vary the look by adding a reflector flat on the floor directly underneath the light to add a little bit of light into the subjects face as I did here:
